Battlefleet Gothic: Reclaiming a hulk for the Navy


Scouting a wreck for possible salvage.

War. It’s the main theme in all of Warhammer 40.000 and regular old fantasy Warhammer. But fighting a war requires manpower, weapons, resources. And Big Fucking Spaceships to destroy other Big Fucking Spaceships with. Oh, and to launch planetkilling, ecosystem-destroying, atmosphere-stripping, obliterating missiles as well. But spaceships don’t come cheap. New ones take decades if not centuries to build, current ones are thousands of years old and painstakenly repaired, modified, rebuilt, upgraded and what not simply because they are so damn expensive. In fact, sometimes it can be cheaper to tow a burned out hulk, reclaimed from a previous warzone, to a refit station and restore it that to build a complete new one. And lets not forget, with more and more knowledge forgotten everyday, the older ships simply ARE better.

With that in mind, I decided on a little project of my own. My Battlefleet Koronus project can use as many ships as possible so why not ‘refit’ a damaged model? (Never mind the obvious real world parallel in that new models are horrendously hard to come by since GW decided to stop selling their specialist range).

Well. I think I have found the purpose that I was lacking so far. Even though it has been a blast building and painting the ships I have so far, there was still something missing, a general theme as it were. Oh sure, the ships so far have been fun to paint/update but the generic green and white colour scheme is straight from the Big Blue Rulebook and belongs to Battlefleet Gothic. Very fit for the tabletop game but when I’m taking pains to adequately portray all the ships that my players might encounter during their travails in the Koronus Expanse, I feel it is only right for me as DM to go that extra light year and make sure the ships are correct in every detail.   I present to you, Battlefleet Koronus! Battlefleet Gothic: The Mechanicus Arrive!

Another update: I’ve (almost) completed my Adeptus Mechanicus Cruiser. I went with the standard painting scheme, the AdMech are suckers for standardisation… and if you don’t buy that argument I’m sure I’ll come up with another one. In any case, I consider this to be tabletop ready although i could benefit from detailling. I’ll have to see how far I’m willing to take this but at the moment, I’m happy with it.

Battlefleet Gothic: Chaos Fleet

Quick blog post: I’ve been steadily progressing these last days/weeks.

Here’s my initial chaos fleet, two Murder Class Cruiser, a Slaughter Class Cruiser and a Styx Class Cruiser. I have six more chaos ships from a lot that I bought, so far I haven’t decided yet to turn them into more ships of the same fleet, perhaps try my hand at sculpting some nurgle ships or even turning a few of them into Imperial Navy reserve ships. I also have a ton of escort vessels as well so expect to see them in the future.

Battlefleet Gothic: Escort Squadron

Some more progress. I’ve painted up three Cobras, all in a green and of-white colour scheme. These guys are pretty easy to paint, just some drybrushing and detailing afterwards. Of course, the more detail you want, the longer it takes. I might go back and add some more windows, some silver highlighting on the guns, white highligting on the prows and/or squadron markings on the prows or side armours but I’ve still got more then enough on my plate for now.
