Well. I think I have found the purpose that I was lacking so far. Even though it has been a blast building and painting the ships I have so far, there was still something missing, a general theme as it were. Oh sure, the ships so far have been fun to paint/update but the generic green and white colour scheme is straight from the Big Blue Rulebook and belongs to Battlefleet Gothic. Very fit for the tabletop game but when I’m taking pains to adequately portray all the ships that my players might encounter during their travails in the Koronus Expanse, I feel it is only right for me as DM to go that extra light year and make sure the ships are correct in every detail. I present to you, Battlefleet Koronus!
The Colour scheme:
First off, the colour scheme. Battlefleet Koronus is marked by a distinctive red armoured prow with gold trimmings. The rest of the ship is a non-descript greyish colour which will help to offset the myriad of details that are present, providing a bland and nonintrusive background colour.
-The very distinctive red will allow me to mix up my various colours a bit: I might go with a muted purple for my second main colour, perhaps an earthtone brown,… So far, I even have a few civilian transport vessels undercoated and I’ll be using my dark grey main colour with perhaps even a yellow prow, just because I like the way it looks. We’ll see. First up, the fleet.
Battlefleet Koronus is luckily well described in the rpg source material. In fact it was this description that gave me the idea in the first place. Here goes:
- Gryphon, Mars Class Battlecruiser, the flagship of the fleet.
- Stormwind, Overlord Class Battlecruiser
- Gethsemane, Gothic Class Cruiser
- Sirius, Lunar Class Cruiser
- Hand of Redemption, Lunar Class Cruiser
- Drake, Tyrant Class Cruiser
- Warspite, Dictator Class Cruiser
- Aegis, Dauntless Class
- Swiftsure, Dauntless Class
- Hawk, Defiant Class
Escorts: Various Firestorm class, Sword class and Falchion class frigates and cobra class destroyers. The escorts are roughly divided into two types of squadro’s, Wrath for the destroyers and Triumph for the frigates. No exact count is given, only a few named ships.
So, two battlecruisers, five cruisers and three light cruisers. And if at all possible, I’d like to add a little personal touch or at least something to differentiate. I’ve come across a blog somewhere during one of my many searches with regards to either Rogue Trader or Battlefleet Gothic and I came across a blog that featured custom made prows, ideal for Battlefleet Gothic ships.
The guy who makes them followed the design philosophy of the Armaggedon class Battleships, which has a more distinct eaglehead then the standard BFG ships. I’ve ordered a few of those as well as a inquisition black ship conversion kit, something that I might to for a later project when my players will encounter the Black Ships making their tour of the Koronus Expanse and Calixis Sector. But all of that is for later. First up, getting my hands on some cruiser hulls! More progress soon!
